St. Teresa's Catholic School is located in the picturesque town of Ravenshoe, nestled 920 meters above sea level amidst the breathtaking landscape of Far North Queensland. Our school, steeped in history and tradition, warmly embraces students from Prep to Year 6, offering a co-educational environment that fosters academic excellence and spiritual growth.
Ravenshoe, Queensland's highest town, is not only known for its stunning natural beauty, surrounded by World Heritage-listed rainforests teeming with unique wildlife and birds, but also for its rich cultural heritage. We acknowledge with respect the traditional owners of this land, the Jirrbal people, who have inhabited this area for generations and whose language and customs continue to enrich our community.
Before 1881, the land where Ravenshoe now stands was initially settled by pastoralists. However, the discovery of red cedar trees at Cedar Creek prompted mining entrepreneur John Moffat to acquire the pastoral properties in 1897. This led to the establishment of a village known as Cedar Creek. By 1910, the railway connection between the nearby mining town of Herberton and Cairns was completed, coinciding with the renaming of Cedar Creek to Ravenshoe. Legend has it that the name "Ravenshoe" was inspired by the discovery of a discarded copy of Henry Kingsley's novel of the same name in the vicinity.
On Sunday, 6 June 1937, St Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church was officially opened, followed by the opening of St Teresa’s Catholic School in 1949 by the Sisters of Mercy.
