St Teresa’s School Procedures for Student Well-being
At St Teresa’s Junior School, we prioritise the well-being of our students by providing comprehensive support through teacher instruction and access to systemic support from Catholic Education Services. Our approach encompasses social and emotional learning, bullying prevention, and student safety.
Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) We value the development of social and emotional awareness and interpersonal skills, which are essential for positive mental well-being. Our curriculum includes programs such as the Zones of Regulation Program, Second Steps Program, Daniel Morcombe Program, and Friendology Program. These initiatives help students build a positive sense of self and equip them with strategies to support their mental health.
Bullying and Cyberbullying Prevention We are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment. Our anti-bullying and cyberbullying programs educate students on proactive and preventative strategies. We emphasise ethical digital behaviour, ensuring that online interactions reflect Christ-centered respect for the dignity of each person. The school investigates and addresses any incidents of bullying, both within and outside school, that impact the school community.
Student Safety The safety and well-being of our students are paramount. We implement various strategies, including access to school counselling, pastoral support, and risk assessment and safety planning, to ensure a secure environment.
School Counsellor Services Our school counsellor is available two days per week to provide short-term individual or group counselling. The process for accessing counselling services includes:
- Initial concerns shared with the child’s teacher or Principal.
- Collaboration between the counsellor, families, and school staff to support students.
- Requests for support assessed during fortnightly meetings with the Principal.
- Parent permission required for primary school students to access counselling.
- Coordination with external psychologists or counsellors, with consent, to implement supportive strategies at school.
Additional Support from Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns Beyond our in-school services, we have access to additional supports provided by the Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns. These include services from a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), Occupational Therapist (OT), Physiotherapist, Psychologist, and programs focused on Healthy Relationships Education and SEL. These resources enhance our ability to address the diverse needs of our students comprehensively.
